Taqwa Bn Ali zal vanaf 12 juli nieuw werk exposeren in de etalage van SIGN aan de Winschoterkade. Haar installatie ุนุงุดู ุงูุดุฌุฑุฉ | The Tree Lover zal in de zomerperiode dag en nacht vanaf de straat te zien zijn, of op afspraak in SIGN.
The Tree Lover (bomenliefhebber) van Taqwa Bn Ali is een installatie die bestaat uit vijf schilderijen op houten panelen, samengevoegd tot een driedimensionaal schilderij in de vorm van een grote open box. De kijker kan letterlijk het schilderij instappen. Binnen de rode installatie zien we een geรฏsoleerde leegte, een poppenhuisachtige kamer, bedekt met hibiscustint en getextureerd met boomschors en hibiscuspulp. Er zijn sporen van een Arabische tekst in de achterwand gegraveerd met houtskool, wat een residu achterlaat op de vloer. De tekst leest als een persoonlijke aantekening of een openbaring in de vorm van een gedicht:

In Aliโs werk wordt haar relatie met het verlaten van thuis een centraal thema waarmee ze de diaspora verkent. In deze installatie verbeeldt ze een poรซtische relatie tussen een boom en de geliefde van de boom als metafoor, waarbij het liefhebben van de boom gelijk staat aan liefde voor klimmen, vallen en bloeden. Het werk nodigt de kijker uit om de geconstrueerde fundering te beklimmen en het binnenste van het schilderij te betreden. Om aan te raken, te ruiken en te leven in een ruimte van totale isolatie. De box wordt een ruimte voor persoonlijke reflectie of een martelkamer.
Over de kunstenaar
Taqwa Bn Ali (1997, Soedan) is een interdisciplinair kunstenaar gevestigd in Nederland. Haar werk, bestaande uit schilderkunst, beeldhouwkunst en performatieve interventies, onderzoekt themaโs als translocatie, integratie en identiteit vanuit een diepe betrokkenheid bij materialiteit. Geworteld in research onderzoekt Aliโs werk de symbolische en emotionele kracht van natuurlijke materialen โ hun vermogen om kloven te overbruggen die ontstaan door ontheemding, met name binnen diaspora ervaringen. Haar benadering begint bij het materiaal zelf: klei, aarde, hibiscus, Arabische gom โ elk een drager van herinnering, erfgoed en transformatie. Zoals ze uitlegt: โHet materiaal komt altijd vรณรณr het idee. Het bepaalt mijn bewegingen; ik werk ermee samenโ.
Ali ontving in 2025 de Koninklijke Prijs voor Schilderkunst voor haar Hibiscus Paintings, een serie die de hibiscusbloem โ een centraal motief in de Soedanese cultuur- terugroept als symbool van veerkracht en autonomie. Het pigment, gewonnen uit bloemen die haar moeder in Soedan stuurde, wordt zowel medium als boodschap. Hibiscus, ooit een handelsartikel onder koloniale handel, wordt in Aliโs werk opnieuw gecontextualiseerd als een levende draad tussen verleden en heden, vaderland en ballingschap. De onstabiele aard ervan (kleurverandering is afhankelijk van licht, temperatuur en tijd), weerspiegelt haar bredere bezorgdheid over vergankelijkheid, herinnering en migratie.
Haar praktijk is niet alleen een terugkeer naar oorsprong, maar ook een daad van herinterpretatie. Door middel van experimentele processen en rituele gebaren transformeert Ali de fysieke eigenschappen van materialen tot gelaagde landschappen van persoonlijke en politieke betekenis. Zo nodigt ze de kijker uit in een ruimte waar verbondenheid tastbaar, kwetsbaar en altijd in beweging is.
Taqwa Bn Ali studeerde in 2023 af aan de kunstacademie Maastricht Zuyd, in de richting Interdisciplinary Arts, en won datzelfde jaar de Henriette Hustinx Prijs. In 2025 ontving ze de Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst. Momenteel studeert ze aan de masteropleiding Arts, Cognition and Criticism aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen.

Award-winning artist Taqwa Bn Ali will exhibit new work in the window of SIGN on the Winschoterkade from 12 July. Her installation ุนุงุดู ุงูุดุฌุฑุฉ | The Tree Lover will be visible from the street day and night during the summer period, or by appointment in SIGN.
The Tree Lover (tree lover) by Taqwa Bn Ali is an installation consisting of five paintings on wooden panels, combined into a three-dimensional painting in the form of a large open box. The viewer can literally step into the painting. Within the red installation we see an isolated void, a dollhouse-like room, covered with hibiscus tint and textured with tree bark and hibiscus pulp. There are traces of an Arabic text engraved in the back wall with charcoal, which leaves a residue on the floor. The text reads like a personal note or a revelation in the form of a poem:

In Aliโs work, her relationship with leaving home becomes a central theme through which she explores the diaspora. In this installation, she depicts a poetic relationship between a tree and its lover as a metaphor, where loving the tree is equal to loving to climb, fall and bleed. The work invites the viewer to climb the constructed foundation and enter the interior of the painting. To touch, smell and live in a space of total isolation. The box becomes a space for personal reflection or a torture chamber.
About the artist
Taqwa Bn Ali (1997, Sudan) is an interdisciplinary artist based in the Netherlands. Her work, spanning painting, sculpture and performative interventions, explores themes of translocation, integration and identity through a deep engagement with materiality. Rooted in research, Aliโs work examines the symbolic and emotional power of natural materials โ their ability to bridge gaps created by displacement, particularly within diaspora experiences. Her approach begins with the material itself: clay, earth, hibiscus, gum arabic โ each a vehicle of memory, heritage and transformation. As she explains: โThe material always comes before the idea. It determines my movements; I work with itโ.
Ali received the Royal Award for Painting in 2025 for her Hibiscus Paintings, a series that recalls the hibiscus flower โ a central motif in Sudanese culture โ as a symbol of resilience and autonomy. The pigment, extracted from flowers sent by her mother in Sudan, becomes both medium and message. Hibiscus, once a commodity under colonial trade, is recontextualized in Aliโs work as a living thread between past and present, homeland and exile. Its unstable nature (its color changes with light, temperature, and time) reflects her broader concerns with transience, memory, and migration.
Her practice is not only a return to origins, but also an act of reinterpretation. Through experimental processes and ritual gestures, Ali transforms the physical properties of materials into layered landscapes of personal and political meaning. In this way, she invites the viewer into a space where connectedness is tangible, vulnerable and always in motion.
Taqwa Bn Ali graduated from the Maastricht Zuyd Art Academy in 2023, in the direction of Interdisciplinary Arts, and won the Henriette Hustinx Prize that same year. In 2025, she received the Royal Award for Free Painting. She is currently studying for the masterโs degree in Arts, Cognition and Criticism at the University of Groningen.
